Twitter GIFs are really MP4 videos
When you upload a GIF to X, it is converted into a short, silent MP4 that loops. That is why the X app has no "save GIF" option and why most downloaders hand you an MP4. Our Twitter GIF downloader gives you both: the untouched original MP4, and a one-click conversion to a real animated .gif.
The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The MP4 is read frame by frame, reduced to the 256 colors a GIF can hold and encoded on your device, so the file never passes through our server.
When to use MP4 and when to use GIF
MP4 is usually five to ten times smaller and keeps the full color range, so it is the better choice for WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and reposting on X. Choose GIF for places that only accept image files: Slack and Discord emoji, some forums, email newsletters and signatures, or presentation tools that do not play video.
Limits
Converted GIFs are capped at 480 pixels wide, 12 frames per second and 20 seconds, which keeps most files under a few megabytes. Only public posts work. For full-length videos in HD, use the Twitter video downloader.
