About the SaaS Founder Simulator

The SaaS Founder Simulator is a free interactive game that puts you in the shoes of a solo founder building a SaaS from scratch. Over 10 scenarios — from picking your tech stack to surviving burnout and fielding acquisition offers — you'll make the same high-stakes decisions that real founders face every day.

Unlike personality quizzes that ask abstract questions, every decision in this simulator has mechanical consequences. Choose to talk to customers first and you'll gain sanity but earn no MRR. Grind 80 hours to hit $5K and you'll gain revenue but risk burning out before the finish line. The numbers react — just like they would in reality.

What is Founder DNA?

Every choice you make is tagged with a DNA type: Builder, Marketer, or Sales. By the end of the game, your decisions are tallied into a percentage breakdown showing your dominant type. Most founders are a blend — but the split often reveals surprising things about how you instinctively approach problems.

  • Builder — you ship first and ask questions later. You love the craft, but can over-engineer or under-market.
  • Marketer — you build an audience before a product. You grow slow but sticky, and rarely overbuild.
  • Sales — you close deals and move fast. You hit revenue quickly, but sometimes over-promise on the roadmap.

The 8 Possible Outcomes

Your final state depends on MRR, sanity, and runway at the end of all scenarios:

  • Indie Hacker Legend — $5,000+ MRR. The rarest outcome. Fewer than 10% of players reach it.
  • Ramen Profitable — $2,000–$5,000 MRR. You're covering costs and controlling your time.
  • Early Traction — $500+ MRR with sanity above 50%. Real progress, real customers.
  • Out of Runway — Runway hit zero. A classic founder story. Write the post-mortem.
  • Burned Out — Sanity hit zero. The grind caught up with you.
  • Still in Your Head — Low MRR, safe decisions. The product lives in drafts.
  • Acqui-hired — You took an early exit at 12x MRR. Smart or too early? Only you know.
  • Ship a Postmortem — You chose a graceful shutdown. Every founder's most underrated skill.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is MRR calculated in the game?

Each choice adds or subtracts a fixed MRR delta. Some choices apply a multiplier (e.g., doubling your prices). MRR can never go below $0. Three consecutive revenue-positive choices trigger a hot streak bonus of +15% on your current MRR.

What are the random events?

Three random events can fire mid-game — Product Hunt Launch Day, Server Down at 2AM, and a Newsletter Feature Offer. They're surprises, just like in real founder life. They fire at fixed points in the scenario sequence and test your ability to handle unexpected situations.

Can I play multiple times?

Yes, and you should. The outcome changes dramatically based on a few key decisions. The acquisition offer, the burnout scenario, and the final pricing decision are the biggest swing points. Try different paths to see all 8 endings.

Are the scenarios based on real situations?

Yes. Every scenario is inspired by real decisions that founders in the BoilerplateHub community have faced — from dealing with VC-backed competitors to deciding whether to accept an acqui-hire offer. The MRR deltas are approximate but directionally realistic.

How do I appear on the leaderboard?

After finishing a game, enter your @handle in the result screen and click Submit. Your score (final MRR) and outcome are saved to the global leaderboard. Only the top 5 founders by MRR are shown publicly.
